Carat is weight, not size
Carat measures weight: one carat is 0.2 grams, divided into 100 points, so a 1.50 carat stone is "one fifty." Weight is not the same as the size your eye sees. A diamond's weight grows faster than its width, so a 2 carat round is not twice as wide as a 1 carat. It is only about a quarter wider across the top, because the extra weight also goes into depth.
What the eye reads is the face-up spread in millimeters, and how well the stone is cut. A well-cut diamond carries its weight across the top and looks larger and brighter; a poorly cut one hides weight in a deep bottom you cannot see. A jump from 1 to 2 carats roughly doubles the weight but widens the face-up by only about a quarter, so the change is real but gentler than the carat number suggests. How price changes with carat
Price does not rise in a straight line with carat. The price per carat jumps at the round "magic" weights (1.00, 2.00, 3.00) because demand clusters on whole numbers. The practical result: a 1.90 carat stone can cost meaningfully less than a 2.00 carat while looking almost identical on the hand, because that last sliver of weight sits in places the eye does not read. Underneath the magic weights sits a deeper curve: one large, clean crystal is rarer to grow than several smaller ones, so a 2 carat stone costs more than two 1 carat stones combined, and per-carat cost keeps rising through 3, 4, and 5 carats.

Keep one distinction straight when comparing quotes: the price of a loose stone is not the price of a finished ring. The setting and the metal add cost on top of the diamond, more in platinum than in gold, and more as the mount grows more complex. Cut, color, and clarity: the other price levers
Carat is one of four levers that set a diamond's price; cut, color, and clarity are the other three, and two stones of identical carat weight can differ widely in price because of them. Cut, covered above, decides how large and how bright the stone reads. The other two are simpler than the grading scales make them look.
Color grades how close the stone is to colorless. The scale starts at D (no detectable tint) and steps down as a faint warm tint appears. The eye stops seeing the difference well before the price does, so a near-colorless grade looks icy white in a setting while costing meaningfully less than the top of the scale.
Clarity grades the small internal and surface marks left behind by crystal growth, called inclusions. Grades step down as inclusions get easier to find under magnification. At a fixed carat weight, moving color or clarity a grade or two moves the price meaningfully, often for differences the eye never sees. So when two stones of the same carat carry very different prices, the report explains why. Read it before the carat number sways you.
A Lab Grown Diamond is a real diamond
Worth stating plainly before you compare carat sizes and prices: a Lab Grown Diamond is a real diamond. It is the same carbon crystal as a mined diamond, hardness 10 on the Mohs scale, with the same optics, and it is graded by the same independent labs. It is not a simulant. Moissanite is silicon carbide and cubic zirconia is zirconium dioxide; both are look-alikes, not diamonds. Moissanite's hardness is commonly cited near 9.25 on the Mohs scale, hard but not diamond.
One practical caution: a basic thermal tester can read both moissanite and a diamond as "diamond," so a pen test alone settles nothing. Reliable identification is the grading report and a gemologist. 4 and 5 carats: what changes
Above 3 carats the same rules apply, amplified. A well-cut round 4 carat Lab Grown Diamond faces up around 10.2 mm and a 5 carat around 11 mm: sizes that read clearly from across a table. Per-carat cost keeps rising with size, because one crystal large enough and clean enough to cut a 4 or 5 carat stone is rarer to grow than several smaller ones. A 4 carat Lab Grown Diamond costs more per carat than a 2 carat, and a 5 carat more still. Even so, both come in well under comparable mined stones of the same quality, which is what puts these sizes within reach at all.
At these weights the stone shows everything. Shape changes how big a carat looks
Elongated shapes spread their weight across a longer face, so at the same carat they cover more of the finger than a round. An oval, a marquise, or an elongated hexagon reads larger than a round of equal weight, which makes shape the least expensive way to buy visual size: it adds no carats at all.

Choosing your size and setting
Bigger stones sit higher and carry more value on the finger, so the setting matters more as carat goes up. A few things to weigh at 2 and 3 carats:
Choose a secure setting. A larger center benefits from sturdy prongs and a supportive basket that protects the girdle through daily wear.
Mind the profile. A tall setting on a large stone can catch on things; a lower, well-braced mount wears more easily.
Make the size go further. An elongated shape (oval, marquise, or our signature elongated hexagonal Dutch Marquise) faces up larger than a round of the same carat. A slim band and a hidden halo also make the center read bigger without adding center weight.
Protect the cut first. A well-cut 1.9 carat outshines a poorly cut 2.2, so spend on cut before chasing the round number.
