Cut and Shape Are Two Different Things

A diamond cut is the faceting pattern: how the stone's surfaces are angled and arranged to return light. A diamond shape is the outline you see from above: round, oval, square, hexagonal. The two words get used interchangeably, and they should not be, because one outline can be faceted in completely different ways and the results look nothing alike.

That is the whole distinction. Below: the four faceting families every cut belongs to, the proof that shape and cut are separate (one outline, two cuts, two entirely different stones), and what "cut grade" means, which is a third thing again. The four faceting families

Every diamond cut belongs to one of a few faceting families, and the family tells you how the stone will behave in light better than the shape does.

Notice what the table implies: "marquise" and "emerald" name shapes, but their rows describe faceting. That is because the familiar names bundle a default pairing (the emerald cut is a step-cut rectangle, the round brilliant is a brilliant-cut circle). The bundle is convention, not law, and the next section shows what happens when it is unbundled.

One outline, two cuts: the proof

The cleanest demonstration that shape and cut are different things sits in our own cases: two stones with the same six-sided outline, an elongated hexagon with pointed ends and straight, angled sides, faceted two different ways.

  • The Dutch Marquise is cut for brilliance: symmetrical facets arranged to maximize sparkle and fire, the chunky flash of light. A grading report reads it as a brilliant-family stone (an IGI report from 2026, for example, describes one as a "Hexagonal Modified Brilliant"; always verify the report on the stone in front of you).

  • The Elongated Hexagon is the step cut of the pair: parallel step facets and an open table, the glassy hall-of-mirrors flash that rewards higher clarity.

Same outline. Different faceting. Two stones that read completely differently in light, and the entire difference is the cut. Once you see this pair, the cut-versus-shape distinction stops being vocabulary and becomes something you can point at. Cut vs cut grade (not the same thing)

One more collision in the vocabulary: the "cut grade" on a grading report is not the cut. The grade (Excellent, Very Good, Good) scores how well a particular stone's proportions and symmetry execute its faceting design. GIA assigns its cut grade only to standard round brilliants; fancy shapes are evaluated on polish and symmetry instead, which is why an oval or an emerald cut has no "Excellent cut" line the way a round does.

So when you compare stones: the cut family tells you what kind of light show to expect, and the grade (or polish and symmetry on fancy shapes) tells you how well the individual stone performs it. Our guide to reading a grading report covers where each lives on the paper.

How to choose between the families

  • Choose brilliant if you want maximum sparkle and the most forgiving stone: the dense faceting masks small inclusions and warmth, so brilliant-family stones stay beautiful at friendlier clarity and color grades.

  • Choose step if you love the calm, architectural look, and budget for clarity: the open table hides nothing, which is why step cuts reward VS1 and up.

  • Choose mixed if you want brilliance in a square or rectangular outline with crushed-ice character.

  • Choose antique if you want candlelight romance and a stone that looks like an heirloom because the faceting style genuinely is one.

And the framing that governs all of it: a diamond is a love piece, not an investment. The right cut is the one whose light you want to look at for decades. Brilliant-family cuts produce the most sparkle, because their faceting is specifically engineered to maximize light return and fire; the round brilliant is the fullest expression of it. Step cuts are not trying to win that contest: they trade sparkle for broad, calm flashes of light. It is a difference in character, not in quality.
