One thing is worth knowing before you start. "Hexagon" describes an outline, not a standardized cut, so two rings sold under nearly identical words can hold noticeably different stones. That is not a warning, it is simply how the term works, and it means the photograph and the measurements tell you more than the title does.

Pick the setting and the stone separately

Which setting styles suit a six-sided stone
A long, angular outline behaves differently in a setting than a round does. A round is symmetrical from every direction, so almost anything holds it gracefully. A six-sided elongated stone has a clear long axis, two narrow ends, and corners where the straight sides meet. Those three features are what each setting style either uses or fights.

Prongs, corners, and the ends of the stone
This is the part of a hexagon Engagement Ring that most buying guides skip, and it is the part a jeweler thinks about first. Where the prongs sit is not decoration. It decides how securely the stone is held and how much of the outline you can still see.
Prongs belong on the corners. On an angular stone the corners, where two straight sides meet, are the natural gripping points. A prong placed mid-edge on a long flat side has less to hold and covers more of the outline.
Pointed ends need a V-prong. If the stone tapers to a point at each end, as a Dutch Marquise does, a V-shaped prong wraps the tip and shields it. This is the single most important construction detail on a tapered stone.
Flat-ended stones are simpler. A hexagon that finishes in a short straight edge at each end has no exposed point to protect, which is one practical reason some buyers prefer it.
Hardness is not the same as toughness. Diamond is a 10 on the Mohs scale, the hardest material used in jewelry, which means almost nothing scratches it. Toughness is a different property: a sharp knock on an unprotected point can chip it. Every diamond behaves this way, mined or Lab Grown.

Why clarity matters more when the faceting is open
Hexagons turn up in two very different faceting styles, and the choice changes what you should spend your clarity budget on.
Step faceting uses broad, flat, parallel facets. It gives clean mirror-like flashes and an open, architectural look. Because those facets are large and you can see through them, an inclusion has fewer places to hide. Brilliant faceting breaks light into smaller, busier sparkle, and that visual noise conceals inclusions well.
Neither style is higher quality. They are two different looks, and faceting varies by maker on any six-sided stone, since there is no industry standard behind the shape name. What follows from that is practical rather than theoretical:
Open, step-like faceting rewards a cleaner grade. Aim for eye-clean and confirm it on the actual stone, not just the grade letter.
Busier brilliant faceting is more forgiving. You can often sit lower on the clarity scale and still see nothing without a loupe.
Stop once it is eye-clean. Past that point you are paying for something no one will ever see on the hand. We would rather you put that money into the stone's size or its cut.
A Lab Grown Diamond costs well under a comparable mined stone, so an eye-clean grade in this shape is usually within reach rather than a stretch. Judge the specific stone. Two diamonds sold under the same shape name can be faceted quite differently, and the photograph tells you more than the label.
How a hexagon wears day to day
A ring is worn every day for years, so how it behaves matters as much as how it photographs. A long six-sided stone has three practical habits worth planning for.
It sits along the finger rather than across it, which is comfortable and is a large part of why elongated shapes flatter the hand. It has a defined long axis, so if the ring rotates on the finger you will notice more than you would with a round. A snug fit and a setting profile that is not top-heavy both help.
Profile height is the other decision. A raised head catches light beautifully and also catches on knitwear, gloves, and hair. A lower profile is quieter and sits better under a glove. If the wearer is hard on their hands, choose the lower one and choose the setting that covers the ends.
Then there is the band. A straight band leaves a small gap against an angled outline, which some people love and some do not, and a contoured band closes it. Ring size, finger length, and how big it reads
Carat is weight, not size. Two stones of identical weight can look meaningfully different face up, and elongated shapes tend to win that comparison because their weight is spread across a longer surface. The number to work from is millimeters, not carats. Take the length and width from the report, then hold them against the width of the finger the ring will live on. A long stone on a smaller ring size can reach close to the edges of the finger, which looks striking on some hands and overwhelming on others. Neither answer is wrong, but you want to make that call on purpose.
Length-to-width ratio is the second number, and you work it out yourself: divide the length by the width. There is no industry standard ratio for a six-sided stone, so we do not publish a target range, and you should be skeptical of anyone who quotes one as if it were official. What matters is the effect. A lower ratio reads broader and more compact. A higher ratio reads slimmer and longer. Look at the photograph with that ratio in mind and you will know quickly which end of the range you like.
What to check on the report
Four lines do most of the work on a hexagon, and one of them is a line people misread.
Measurements. Length, width, and depth in millimeters. This is your face-up size and your ratio, and it is more informative than the carat weight.
Clarity, read against the plot. Where an inclusion sits matters as much as the grade, particularly under an open, step-like table.
Cut grade, or the absence of one. Most fancy shapes carry no overall cut grade from the labs, so quality varies stone to stone. Read the proportions and look at the diamond.
The shape line. Labs certify measurable geometry, not marketing names. On one real IGI report for a Dutch Marquise we sell, the shape line read "Hexagonal Modified Brilliant" (IGI report, 2026). A different lab, or a differently faceted stone, may phrase it another way.
