The single proportion that controls how an oval looks is its length-to-width ratio. Take the length and the width in millimeters from the report and divide the first by the second. A stone measuring 8.00 by 6.00 mm has a ratio of 1.33. Most ovals land between 1.30 and 1.50, and that range covers the full spread of looks people mean when they say "oval."

The Bow-Tie Effect
The bow-tie is the one thing every oval buyer should learn to see. It is a dark shape, shaped like a bow-tie, that runs across the width of the stone through its center. It happens because the elongated faceting can send some light out the bottom of the diamond instead of back to your eye, and your own head can block light from reaching that central zone. Every elongated brilliant (oval, marquise, and pear) shows a bow-tie to some degree. It is a property of the shape, not a defect on its own.
What separates a good oval from a poor one is the severity. Here is how to judge it, and it is simpler than it sounds:
Look at the stone face up. A photo, a 360-degree video, or the stone in hand under normal light will show the bow-tie clearly. A grading report will not, because the labs do not grade the bow-tie.
A faint, soft bow-tie is fine. A little central contrast is normal and can even add life as the stone moves. You are not looking for zero.
A heavy, opaque bow-tie is a fault. If a solid dark band kills the sparkle across the middle and stays dark as the stone tilts, that is light leakage you do not want.
You cannot polish a bow-tie away after the fact, but a well-proportioned oval keeps it minimal by design. Why an Oval Looks Larger Than a Round
This is the reason ovals are so popular, and it is real geometry rather than sales talk. Carat is a measure of weight, not size. When you take a fixed amount of weight and lay it out in an elongated shape instead of a circle, the stone spreads across a larger face-up area, the part you actually see from above. So an oval covers more finger than a round of the same carat weight.
In round numbers: a 1.00 carat round brilliant is roughly 6.4 mm across, while a 1.00 carat oval is roughly 7.7 by 5.7 mm. These three shapes get confused because they are all elongated and all share the brilliant faceting family. The difference is entirely in the ends and the outline. An oval is fully rounded with no points. A marquise is elongated to a sharp point at each end, the classic navette or boat shape. A moval is the hybrid in between: an oval whose ends are gently tapered toward soft points, softer than a marquise but more pointed than an oval.

The oval has one real practical advantage over the other elongated shapes: it has no points, so nothing needs a protective V-prong. That makes the setting simpler and the stone more forgiving for daily wear. A few things are still worth deciding with intent.
Four prongs or six. Four prongs leave more of the outline open and modern; six give a little more security and a more traditional look. Either holds an oval well.
