Why Symmetry Is Everything

If they match, you have a good heart. If they do not, no size or color will save it.
The Bow-Tie Effect

The proportion that sets a heart's character is its length-to-width ratio. Take the length and the width in millimeters from the report and divide the length by the width. A classic, balanced heart lands near 1.0, roughly 0.90 to 1.10, so the stone is about as tall as it is wide. That is the ratio most people picture when they think of the shape.
Move away from 1.0 and the look changes. Above about 1.10 the heart reads taller and narrower, which can look elegant but starts to lose the plump, unmistakable heart silhouette. Below about 0.90 it reads wide and full, bordering on squat. None of these is a defect, and none of it is a grade; it is taste. The important point is that a heart faces up about as broad as it is long, so unlike a pear or an oval it does not lengthen the finger. It reads full and bold instead, which is part of its appeal.
Why Size Matters for a Heart
A heart packs three features into one outline: two lobes, a cleft, and a point. A diamond is the hardest natural material there is (Mohs 10), but hardness is not toughness. Any sharp point concentrates stress, so the tip at the base of a heart is the one spot most likely to chip if the stone takes a knock. A good setting exists partly to solve that, and it is not an afterthought on this shape.
The standard fix is a V-prong, sometimes called a chevron prong, a small metal shield shaped to wrap around the point and cover it from both sides.
